Releasing yourself from the to do list

THIS week Joanna asked:

“Being busy all the time is getting me down. My friends often feel the same way trying to juggle work and a family. What can we do?”

Why is it that we get ourselves in such a tizz over our to do list? Is it that constant gnawing sensation or that feeling of drowning that follows us everywhere? Like a juggler with too many balls in the air, they all get dropped.

There’s no doubting life used to be simpler. Today there are more demands being placed on us than ever before. Forget the avalanche of advertising that bombards us daily and the emails that breed like rabbits, the reality is it just doesn’t feel good thinking that we have to move quickly from one thing to the next. Even eating in our cars and on the run has become the norm!

My latest go-to gurus on all things ‘life’, Esther and Jerry Hicks really make sense on this issue. When it comes to the dreaded to do list they quite bluntly say, “You’ll never get it all done!” They conclude that because we are an evolving, ever-expanding species, there will always be more to create, to become….and yes, to do.

But before you think I’ve completely taken the wind out of your sails, I’d prefer you to feel as though the pressure-valve has been released. Doesn’t it help to know that if “we never get it all done” we might as well have fun along the way?

Tips on how to liberate yourself from the list:

  • Choosing to do some things well rather than lots of things sparingly will help you to feel less overwhelmed and more satisfied.
  • Get acquainted with the Priority Matrix. Certainly, I was bored out of my brain when we covered this time management tool in school…but it’s easy and it works.
  • Delegate. Be ok with it.

“Be gentle with yourself” might not be the answer you’d expect, but it is relevant. This Archangel Michael card by Doreen Virtue is all about giving yourself a break.

Hmmm. You’ve got me thinking Joanna about my own list. Maybe, next time the circus comes to town, I’ll add ‘book tickets’ to my to do. I hope they bring the jugglers!

Attached to this week’s card is a prayer to help you honour yourself – emotionally and physically:

“Archangel Michael, please guide me in treating myself with gentle, nurturing love in everything I think, speak, and do. Help me know that I deserve this compassion. I release any feelings of guilt to you so that I may experience lasting inner peace”.
