Ask Sharon
Don’t sweat small stuff
THIS week a question was submitted anonymously:
“I’m usually fairly calm but lately when someone pushes my buttons I feel like I can’t control my anger. How can I control it?”
Your question was perfectly timed after a recent spat with my hubby. I knew I had overreacted, I even knew my argument was flawed….but I wasn’t ready to admit that yet! While I pondered your question I opened Kristine Carlson’s Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff for Women and like a ray of light the chapter “Speak from Your Love” appeared.
“Why does it become difficult for all of us, at times, to be in touch with the most magnificent part of who we are – our love – and then to speak from this place? Our egos and emotions and habits of reacting and overreacting keep us from speaking from our love. It is most challenging to speak from your love when you are angry.”
Is it easy to not respond in anger if that is how you’ve always handled things? Nope. Can this behaviour be changed? You betcha! As I’ve said before, when it comes to matters of all things transformation, awareness is king (or queen!).
Sometimes the cards reveal a subtle meaning but today it was literal. The “Wait” card from Doreen Virtue’s Angel Answers deck indicates the power of a pause, especially in the heat of the moment.
Hot tips for staying cool under fire:
- Recognise that there are no winners in a bickering battle. Harmony will most certainly be the first casualty.
- Ask, “Is defending being ‘right’ really worth it?“ If you know the truth in your soul is that not enough?
- Consider, how good do you really feel after a verbal victory, if it’s at the cost of another’s feelings (or the relationship)?
- Remember, there’s always room for a hero (or heroine) to emerge.
I heard a touching story in the lead up to Anzac day about Aussie trumpeter, Sergeant Ted McMahon, who in the middle of battle began playing his cornet. Accounts record the guns on both sides gradually falling silent as he played. It seems the power of a pause can bring peace (even briefly) to a battle on the western front or on the home front.
