At 12:52am tomorrow morning the moon will be the closest full moon to Earth since 1948. To see something like this again we’ll have to wait until 2034. This full moon has been referred to as “the supermoon of all supermoons” for obvious reasons.
So what is this particular supermoon (or perigee-syzygy, for those of you scientific folk playing at home) all about?
For this I consulted my trusty Wellbeing Astrology 2016 Moon Calendar which shed some light on this subject (pun intended):
“With the earth element highlighted under this Full Moon, life may have a settled, solid or stable feel. Taurus is the ultimate sign about security and pleasure. Use this lush Full Moon to slow down and enjoy all you’ve worked so hard to create. Venus, the ruler of the Full Moon, is also in an earth sign, Capricorn. Pleasure that’s affordable and helps enhance your most enduring relationships will appeal most. Jupiter and Saturn also work together, promising progress on big life dreams.”
Just the mention of big life dreams and you’ve got me hook, line and sinker. But as I was contemplating this supermoon, I kept thinking of the word ‘luminosity’ – as in, this supermoon is trying to illuminate a message for each and every one of us. That, in turn, got me thinking about two of my favourite quotes about light.
“Most of the shadows of this life are caused by standing in one’s own sunshine.” Ralph Waldo Emerson
Duly noted.
And…
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” Nelson Mandela
Ahhh, now I think I’m getting it. Note to self, let the light shine (and don’t make excuses for it).
A full moon has the potential to affect our moods, emotions, energy and sleep patterns at the best of times, but a supermoon of this magnitude…well, I think you’re beginning to get the picture. It’s big. Superbig. My advice is go with it; use this as an opportunity to clear house (metaphorically or literally, it’s your choice). Whatever you do, let go. The keyword is R.E.L.E.A.S.E. Let go of old beliefs, behaviours, conditioning and patterns – anything that no longer serves you. As clichéd as it sounds the truth of the matter is, until we let go of the old we cannot create space for the new to enter. It’s just the way it is.
So what sorts of traits would it be good to say goodbye to this supermoon?
Think:
- Unforgiveness
- Pessimism
- Blame
- Criticism
- Resentment
- Judgment;
- and that old foe Fear.
Overcome some of these negative qualities and before the new dawn – cue dramatic background music – you will be guaranteed to feel lighter, renewed…and maybe even a little superhuman!
