Today is my birthday and for most of us the day of our birth is when we are also given our name. Which got me thinking how powerful our names are?
So before we belt out a rendition of “Happy Birthday” and delve into the sounds and soul lessons of your name, first a little bit of background to this interesting subject courtesy of Diana Cooper’s book A New Light on Ascension.
“Before you were born your soul met with your guides and your guardian angel. One of the Ascended Masters and an Archangel may also have attended the consultation, depending on your level of evolution. The purpose of this was to discuss the lessons your soul wished to learn on Earth. If you are a lightworker, you would also have discussed what you were to teach and how you intended to serve.
In order to carry the correct vibration, your name was carefully selected during this consultation. It was then imparted telepathically to your parents so that they could name you appropriately for your mission.
The vibration of your name when it is thought or spoken contains your lessons, your mission and the essence of your destiny. Each time your name is sounded it draws your soul’s chosen experiences to you*.”
So I have recreated the information from Cooper’s book to share with you how powerful your name is**. For some, it will generate an “aha, now I get it” response, for others it may open the door for them to see how they could be living their life differently in order to learn the lessons connected to their name. It also makes an interesting (and empowering and fun) exercise to do with friends and family. You could even try to predict what your lessons or others’ lessons might be before you actually look up the table to see how well you know yourself or someone else.
The following table has been adapted from A New Light on Ascension and includes the meanings of the sounds of different letters. To know the lessons behind your name, sound it out phonetically. I’ve used my name, Sharon, as an example below:
Sh = inner beauty
a = purity
r = honest communication
o = integrity
n = centredness
So in a nutshell, from my name’s perspective, I came to Earth in this lifetime to learn to:

So what’s in a name I contemplate once again? Quite a lot it seems. You can’t get much bigger than soul mission status.
*Side note for those with children:
It may seem obvious to you now that you are aware of the power a name holds, but even more important for parents is to always say your child’s name affectionately. If a person’s name is spoken in anger, they may feel fearful without knowing why. For some of us, we only have to recall times from our own childhood when our parents would use our full name in a tone to express their anger, disappointment or frustration with us to know how that felt. I certainly will be mindful from here on in to always say my children’s names in a lovingly way.
**Side note regarding surnames and those with nicknames:
Cooper writes:
“Some people can only cope with part of their lessons and use a nickname or an abbreviated first name, especially in childhood. Often in adulthood they will take on their full soul mission by using their full name. Your surname also calls in experiences. Each time you change your name your life changes.”
Just think, the more marriages, the more you change your name, the more life lessons you’ve signed up for. It certainly gives an added incentive in choosing a mate wisely!
I also think it’s nice to know that all the children who are given unusual names by (mostly) celebrities still get a look-in when it comes to the soul mission stakes. Just for a giggle I’ve added a link to a list of interesting? names. Click here to be amused and bemused….my personal favourite Pilot Inspektor!
It came as no surprise that wisdom features prominently in my name, haha!
Then the aha moment…..am I supposed to seek it?
Thanks Mark for sharing and for enquiring further. Yes, wisdom is strongly represented in your name (via the M and K) and therefore takes centre stage on your mission in this lifetime. I feel that when it is looked at in conjunction with your other letters (A and R) it will be useful to remember the virtues of purity and truth. If it all seems too much, here’s a reminder of some wise words from the wise Winston Churchill
“All men make mistakes, but only wise men learn from their mistakes.” It seems already you sought and found wisdom. All the best.
