On this morning’s Entertainment segment of The Today Show with Richard Wilkins, Iggy Azalea opened up about growing up in Mullumbimby and being the new face of Bonds. But it was her comments about confidence that took me by surprise. Her insight is worth sharing as we can all recall those days when we don’t feel like facing the world. Lucky for us out of the celebrity spotlight, we have more opportunity to retreat to our ‘caves’ than someone like Iggy who would be in constant demand.
Richard asked Iggy:
“When you look at the [Bonds] shoot you are doing you just ooze confidence and you’ve become a role model for young Aussie girls. Where does that confidence come from?”
Iggy replies passionately:
“I don’t know! Some days I just think I want to crawl in my cave and I don’t feel confident at all and other days I feel great and I think it’s like that for all human beings, not just young women. I think maybe feeling confident or 100% everyday, its something to aspire to but I don’t know if it’s humanly possible for anybody. And I think it’s just having that kind of honest moment with yourself and other people and almost admitting and embracing your flaws and things about you that you sometimes feel bad about, can empower your own self.”
Iggy’s comments particularly resonated with me because I have recently changed my ethos to ‘embracing imperfection’ and she really summed it up perfectly.
Maybe embracing our flaws is a fast-track to empowerment because it allows us to be comfortable in our own skin. And I think that banishes doubts and gives us the confidence to get on with more important things in life.
Speaking of which, as I added a smiley face to my son’s lunch order bag – almost as an exclamation point to Iggy’s words of wisdom and my now super-confident mood – I thought to myself, “Today is shaping up to be an out-of-the-cave day.”
Understandably, my family were naturally curious when they converged on the kitchen to find me belting out Iggy’s “Fancy” (and busting a few ‘fancy’ moves of my own). Well, the least I can do is embrace this good-feeling because tomorrow might be another story.
